Oct 2022 - Upper Michigan Waterways Adventure

Life, school and Album Archive got in they way of my blogging. Which is a shame, because TaGeez and I have had many adventures in the last year.

ShelleyJean reminded me why I do this blog - so we can share some caching amazingness and relive our adventures. Seneca County is a case in point - we're going to do their newest geotrail, and this blog post reminded us what a jewel that area is!

So, bear with me as I do a little catch-up because we have more amazing adventures in our near future. These catch-up posts may not be text heavy, but sometimes you have to let the pictures do the talking.

During a 3-day weekend in October, ShelleyJean, TaGeez and I decided to head up to the Upper Peninsula for the next leg of the Michigan Waterway Adventure Lab GeoTour. We had hoped to beat the snow, but Mother Nature has a sense of humor

Right over the bridge is a series of parks, and we, of course, had to ham it up.  This park is on US 2 outside of Epoufette.

This is where it gets hard - we stopped at so many amazing lighthouses, and we took so many great pictures at each stop. I think there's a magic when you cross the Mighty Mac where amazing photo opportunities are everywhere!

This was particularly memorable because it was off-season, and we had the compound alone.

Our favorite treasure of the day was not geocache-related! It was pasties at the Three Seasons Café outside of Manistique! WOW! This was on our must-do and didn't disappoint. How do you take your pasties? With ketchup or gravy?

We continued heading west on US 2 for another Lighthouse Virtual. Hard to believe this one is 4/10th of a mile out into the water (as the crow flies). Luckily the team is always game! Now we turn North. The goal is the hit Houghton before nightfall (didn't happen thanks to the whiteout!).

Manistique had fabulous murals downtown - we experienced them thanks to the local Adventure Labs.

Final stop of the day was such a "Yooper" Virtual. 20 questions of oddities at a roadside tourist trap (and we loved every moment of it even if the flakes started to fly!)

Next morning the snow melted away, and we headed to Husky Plaza in Houghton. Now, we love Virtuals, but this was an added bonus! It was a webcam, too! Genius! I hope they one day bring true webcams back. I wonder what the nearby racers were thinking as we posed and waved!

Now it's the time to cross the Houghton bridge towards Copper Harbor! The color were already past their prime and the weather drizzly, but it was still a gorgeous drive Northeast.

Special note: If you do the Adventure Labs, cell service is really spotty. Luckily, between the three of us, I had just enough service to log the ALs for all of us. If you have spotty service, here's the steps to completing an Adventure Lab offline (link). The downside is you have to set this up while you still have service.

Honestly, I think this is the most gorgeous photo I've ever taken while geocaching! 💖 The fog over the lake visible from this boat access gave it such an ethereal frame. And look at that reflection!

Silver River Falls

Our Adventure Labs in Copper Harbor were a success (and so hard not to post pictures of every stop!). Heading towards Houghton, we detoured for another bonus Adventure Lab outside Calumet. This one was so sad, so disturbing. This was the site of the Italian Hall Tragedy where 73 miners and their family died in a fire on Christmas Eve.

We sought comfort in the giant cinnamon rolls at Hilltop Restaurant.

We are curving East towards Munising. Again, I'm so appreciative that ShelleyJean is always willing to stop and take our photos. This is one of my favorites on our digital frame.

This was my first (and NOT my last) time in Munising! WOWWEE! Cute little town, but amazing trails and waterfalls!

Last day in the UP, and we'll be heading home in a few hours. Too late in the season to go to Seney, but we did detour here for a peaceful Virtual.

When you think the "U.P." you think of Whitefish Point! The Whitefish Point Lighthouse.....

The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum...

Which features the historic sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. I had goosebumps when I stepped up to the exhibit and Gordon Lightfoot started to play overhead.

Final stop was in Sault Ste. Marie where we visited the Locks, had lunch at a road-kill restaurant (seriously, so many dead carcasses on the wall) and visited the Ancient Anishinaabek Burial Ground.

Oh, and yes, we finished the 10 stages of the Waterways of Chippewa-Keweenaw Adventure!

One more to go!
