Colorado Adventure 1 - Mingo and Arikaree

Have you noticed I’ve been a little quiet lately? TaGeez and I were on an amazing adventure out west!

During our Jasmer trip to Indiana in June, TaGeez and I decided this year is the year for Mingo (GC30), the oldest active geocache in the world. We’ve been meaning to make this pilgrimage for years, but the “3 C’s” got in the way. Deemed safe to travel now by my oncologists, Steve and I decided this was the year.

But do we really want to spend 3 days driving out and driving back? Because as geocachers, it would take more than 3 days each way. Let's save some time and fly!

Well, no sense in flying into Denver and just return so we decided to make an entire adventure out of it! So, in mid September, we headed out.

TaGeez's first plane trip in DECADES

Day 1 - Sunday: Colorado, Kansas and Nebraska

Our first day was all about geocaching: landing at DIA, grabbing our rental car, visiting Mingo and a few other choice caches along the way.

Travel has changed! There were wonderful Adventure Labs and Virtuals at both DTW and DIA! We didn't get to enjoy the Conspiracy Theories as much as we hoped because when we landed in Denver it was chaos and construction! But we were able to grab it! Our first Colorado cache!

After a trying experience at the Budget rental counter (long lines and a rental with a brake failure message), we were on the road, past the giant blue stallion outside DIA, and heading the Kansas & Mingo!

Kansas Visitor Center

The 3-hour drive from Denver to Mingo was gorgeous! Miles and miles of amber fields reaching to the skyline. The rhythm of the road, my audiobook, and TaGeez's snoring in the passenger seat. It was a gloriously peaceful drive to Mingo. Surprisingly we were so busy enjoying it that we captured no photos of it - but no camera could capture the majesty and sheer immensity of it.

We made it! And, of course, Signal sporting his new Colorado trackable had to pose first. If you look close, you will see one of our Mingo geocoins, too. Mingo didn't disappoint - it was exactly as described... a fence off a defunct park & ride with nothing for miles around! But we made it and had to pose with it!

Signal's TB is actually a dog tag from Amazon.
The vendor engraved my tracking code on it for free!

When in Mingo and nearby Colby, don't forget to grab the Mingo Virtual (marker missing), Adventure Lab and high-favorited caches.

You could tell the sun was already starting it's descent, but how could we head to Colorado Springs without detouring for another JASMER gem? Beautiful Arikaree GC31 is a May 2000 cache, too!

It's funny about this trip. Each day we had one main goal and one side adventure planned. Funny how the side adventures were in many ways more memorable and enjoyable than the main one.

Take Arikaree, for instance. Located 1.5 hours northwest of Mingo and just a few miles south of the Nebraska border. Take I-70 to a scenic road, which turned into a sketchy dirt road the further north you go. Before you reach Arikaree (we still have no idea how to pronounce this), you must pass through the Arikaree Breaks. Now, I'm not big into Earth Caches, but this place left an impression (literally and figuratively).

The Arikaree Breaks are a finalist for the 8 Wonders of Kansas because the deep canyons make this a distinct and scenically dramatic part of Kansas! The Arikaree Breaks are a rugged landscape of canyons that have formed in a type of windblown silt called loess. [Kansas Sampler]
The Arikaree Breaks are located on the extreme northern edge of Cheyenne County just a few miles east from the Land & Sky Scenic Byway. The stunning views of the gullies and rock formations are comprised of loess rocks which are a mixture of wind deposits from sand, silt, and clay. The breaks are 36 miles long and approximately two to three miles wide but mostly reside on private land. [Kansas Tourism]
Again, no camera could do this place justice.

We spent a lot of time appreciating Arikaree, but the sun is setting and Nebraska is just a few miles north. We had to take the opportunity to grab another state souvenir.

Ok, cacti is a thing? I almost stepped on it!

Now the sun is truly kissing the horizon, and we still have HOURS of driving to Colorado Springs. Although beautiful, we had several opportunities to test our bravery. Try driving for hours, in the dark, along unfamiliar country roads with NO houses in between in a strange rental car. Bumps! Animal eyes flashing in the headlights. Miles and miles and miles of emptiness and darkness with almost no phone connectivity.

After 3 hours in the air and 12 hours on the road, we pulled into Colorado Springs in the darkness. Little did we know what morning had in store for us!

3 state souvenirs!

MSPCGT: Signal Does the State Parks

I've been dragging my feet on writing this post, because I have so many fabulous memories and pictures from the Michigan State Park Centennial GeoTour (MSPCGT)! So, I decided to show you the amazing adventures of Scrapcat, TaGeez, and ShelleyJean through the eyes of Signal the Frog!

Michigan State Parks is celebrating their 100th birthday by sponsoring a geotour of its amazing parks! 100 regular and large caches hidden across 4 regions. Find them all for 4 path tags, 2 geocoins, a geotour souvenir and a lifetime of amazing memories. Because nothing is more beautiful than the State of Michigan!

And Signal couldn't agree more! He had a tour of some of the best sites in Michigan! Starting with a First-to-Find on Belle Isle with Scrapcat!

The tour kicked off Memorial Day weekend, and our adventurous group spent two days tooling around the thumb grabbing smilies and code words. Because I don't want to spoil the fun for others, I won't list the parks under the pictures.

Not kidding... we didn't spot this one immediately.

Signal found a frog!

The following week found our intrepid explorers making a State Park run up US 23 and into the Upper Peninsula.  Gosh! It was beautiful. We had 6 days of amazing weather, amazing views, and all that's wonderful in the UP.

Lake Huron

Ocqueoc Falls

Upper Tahquamenon Falls

Lakenenland

Lake in the Clouds

Bond Falls

Menominee Rapids

Kitch-iti-kipi AKA The Big Spring

Mackinac Bridge
The Upper Peninsula trip was 1,826 miles long driving the entire perimeter. We walked 32 miles. Stayed in 5 hotels. Grabbed smilies and code words in 31 State Parks, and added 14 more Michigan counties! TaGeez and I completed our Michigan counties on this trip!

44 State Parks down, and we are enjoying every one of them! More adventures in two weeks!

MWGB Wrap Up - Cache Tales

Kneel More has posted his latest video - a recap of Midwest GeoBash 2016. Ever wonder what a Mega event is like?

And you will find yours truly midway through the video with a dragon and a frog - how cool is that?

Thank you, Neil, for including me. I have to admit I watched the part of the little boy playing tether ball a few times and still chuckle.

Be Still, My Lego-beating Heart!

Just saw this in my email from Geocaching.com!

It combines 2 of my loves! I'm hooked!

Wanna see my froggy? He's a Signal of great things!

Aren't these fabulous!?!?! Introduced at MOGA 2016, these trackable medals were made available to the (qualifying) public by the AFK Geocaching Group of Cincinnati.

I thought, since TaGeez and I each completed a challenge near and dear to our hearts within the last year, this would be the perfect souvenir for an amazing task completed!

I ordered the JASMER medal for myself and the 366 medal for TaGeez. Both took years to accomplish, and this is our little fanfare of our completion.

Plus, with the summer Olympics about to start and MWGB's Sports theme this year, we will now have something to wear!

Midwest Geobash 2015: Superheroes II

Too much fun at Midwest GeoBash 2015 to pack it into one post!

DAY 3 - Treasure Hunt and Closing Ceremonies

Saturday was such a silly day, starting with the annual family picture, then horsing around at the show ring for the Treasure Hunt.  Signal, the Original Can of Beans and fun in the photo booth.  After the closing ceremonies was more bonfires, SnakeyLicks grilled Philly Cheesesteaks, grabbing the last of the fairground caches, and a pretty amazing storm to lull us to sleep.

WikidKriket, SnakelyLicks, TaGeez, scrapcat and 3inaTree
Caching Fire came out to meet all his friends on the way to the annual Treasure Hunt.  What a hoot! To see a rogue's gallery of all this new friends, check out his MWGB log!

So, what is the Treasure Hunt?  Dole out $5 for a ticket to the event - every ticket a winner!  In this horse ring, use a metal detector to find a commemorative trackable plus a chance to win a GPSr.  We never miss it.

To ward off the summer heat, we loaded into the cars and caravaned to some of the former Poker Run sites: The Brown Bag, Turkeyfoot Creamery (for the amazing goat cheese including the Garlic Chevre), and (eventually) Homestead Ice Cream.  Lunch was from Outlaw BBQ's food truck and then onto shenanigans in the Spangler arena.

DAY 4 - Time to go home

"The party doesn't have to end, but you have to go home."

Sunday dawned much cooler after the evening's storms.  Fabulous that the humidity was at bay - not so fabulous that we had to pack wet camping gear.  We won't mention the surfacing of more inexplicable car problems, but, really.... the dang thing is only 2.5 years old! (sigh)

Not to let it ruin our trip, we decided we had to detour to one more special cache.  Ever drank water out of an Artesian Aquifer?

Artesian Aquifer GC1057N
This is a really cool Earth Cache just north of the Fairgrounds.  We all had a sip and a wash-up!
You may have heard of an Artesian Well before but never saw one or know how they work. This EarthCache will not only show you one, it will allow you to drink or bathe from one if you wish. When I placed it some local people came to fill containers. They told me that many people have been getting water here since at least 1936 and that the water only stopped flowing twice.
A pretty cool way to finish a fantastic trip!
