Geocaching adventures in the Great Lakes and beyond. I can't think of a more glorious way to spend a day then to put on my Wellies & my yellow rain slicker, toss my pack on my back, slip a camera in my pocket, and head off to parts unknown with my partner, TaGeez.

3,000 Days of Caching Joy
So, what have you done over the last 3,000 days? I went in search of plastic containers! EVERY DAY!
From the Atlantic Ocean to the Mississippi River - Michigan to Georgia. Plus a few choice morsels in California, too. From -26° F to a heat factor of 110°+. Blizzards, business trips, holidays and pandemics. Let's not forget the times TaGeez and I were car-less. Such an challenging adventure!
But all good things come to an end, my friends. I said when it stops being fun, I would end it. And, heading into the new year, it's felt like such a chore. We've cleaned out our area, for months grabbing lamp skirts & street signs. I think the last 50 days were the greatest challenge with Michigan's Stay-at-Home order and the global pandemic.
But as I sit here, I'm resisting the urge to slip on my Wellies and go grab a P&G. How do people do this? You just go home after work?!? TaGeez is willing to continue this madness with me, but it's time. We are turning our focus to more hiding, walking geotrails, and planning more adventures. I can't wait to see where this takes us!
As of today, I have the sixth all-time longest streak in Michigan and the third longest active streak in Michigan. I will enjoy it for the next seven days when Team Hugs surpasses me in both.
Thank you, my Sweet TaGeez, for your willingness to share this insane journey ❤️ And Thank you for all the hiders that made this possible!

2400 Sunshines!
With months and months of working on this....
Plus trying to get our newly organized house setup for the holidays...
And cat-sitting for my boss while on her cruise....
I still managed to do this! 2400 cache-a-day streak!

6 Years: A Little Streaking Never Hurts!
Six times around the sun!
Yesterday was 60 degrees and sunny so, of course, we had to have a blizzard on this great milestone day! After a failed FTF and with snowflakes coming down, TaGeez and I grabbed this little guy to complete six straight years of cache-a-day streaking!
ShelleyJean asked if I'm going to make it a seventh. I guess it all depends on what the weather is like tomorrow :)

I still used a GPSr.... well, sort of.
TaGeez broke his leg.
Now, that sounds like the ending of an epic adventure. But it is not. It has been our reality for almost two weeks now. So, today found me out running errands by myself. A little bit of groceries and then my cache-a-day. I'm less than 6 weeks from realizing my goal of cache-a-day streaking for 5 years straight.
In this time, I went a month without a car, dealt with -26 degree temps, and cached on my way home from the hospital. But TaGeez laid up has not been enjoyable, especially dealing with... da da DA! MY PHONE!
Five years of streaking is within my reach!
In this time, I went a month without a car, dealt with -26 degree temps, and cached on my way home from the hospital. But TaGeez laid up has not been enjoyable, especially dealing with... da da DA! MY PHONE!
I love my iPhone, but more often than not lately it's a paperweight (and not a paperweight I can afford to replace). My iPhone 5 has the dreaded 'battery issue' (my diagnosis - according to Apple there is nothing wrong with it). I could be sitting a 74% battery with no apps running, no background refresh, Bluetooth off, and drop in seconds to 1% - CRASH! Shuts down completely. But when I plug it in, I'm at 53% battery. Heaven help me if I don't have a power source nearby.
Hey! Any of you know... is it worth paying to replacing the battery?
I'm getting mixed answers, but there's nothing otherwise wrong with it.
So imagine today... I'm exiting the grocery store to see my battery at 4% (WTH?!?! It was almost charged when I entered. Damn potatoes! They are the culprits! Those eyes always watching!)

Crap. Ok, time to reach for an alternate power source because TaGeez will be waking from his nap, and I need to be home. I plugged my phone into my car charger - nada. Sigh - the Ford Sync system. And I only have one external battery with me... and it's dead, too.
Well, Hell.
Trek all the way home, grab a battery and back out today? It's getting late. Grrrrr!!!!! It's been a long week.
As I pulled out of the lot, I recalled a cache belonging to afishoutawater that I had to skip earlier in the week. On Wednesday, as I pulled up near the GZ, a construction crew renovating a nearby hotel exited for the day and caught sight of me. Thinking about it today, can I remember how to get back there? Not on my normal side of town and in an area I frequent. Risk it not being there? Or revisited by the crew? Could the gates be locked?
I made it back to Telegraph and then was a little lost. Where is this place? Last time I had approached from the backside. Surely there can't be THAT MANY hotels under construction??? Looking up at my car GPSr, which is always on, I broke out into a smile. Breadcrumb trails.
The little blue line on my screen led me back to the spot from whence I came once before. This time the gates were open and the lot empty. I headed to the North side of the lot. Eagerly, I pulled up to the general area, got out and started my search. After a few minutes I came up empty. DRAT! So darn close!
Pulling out of the lot, I looked over my right shoulder to make sure all was clear, and what did I see about 20 feet away?
That's right. I had left last time without getting a close look at the GZ. And now I have a log in hand. Sweet! The things we do for a smiley.
Now, how do I get home?

Streaking for 3 Years!
Happy Birthday to me! Not only was Monday my 45th birthday, but it was the 3rd Anniversary of my cache-a-day streak!
To celebrate my birthday, my sister, WikidKriket, took me to Kalamazoo and Holland (I'll post those shortly). But to celebrate my streak, we detoured to Grand Rapids for the School Spirit webcam GCK2M9!
By the time we arrived, it was very dark (and getting colder fast). Luckily there was enough ambient light to take the pics. We took multiple under different lights for best effect!
1,095 days down and ?? to go!

TOTT: Winter in Michigan
On some of the recent podcasts, they've talked about "essential tools of the trade (TOTT)" or "must haves" in your geocaching bag. I was thinking about updating a blog post on that, but how different would my answers be? GPSr, iPhone, spare batteries, tweezers.....
But one thing nobody seemed to mention was the need for different tools for different weather. I have different gloves, coats, wellies/boots depending on the season. Bug spray in summer and hand/feet warmers in winter. In summer you carry extra water and bug bite remedies, and in winter you carry extra water and a different road emergency kit.
Winter finally struck in Michigan during the Super Bowl - we received 16.7" of wet, heavy snow. I'm grateful it's not as bad as last year but am a little worried as I'm just 4 weeks away from completing my 3-year cache-a-day streak.
As you've seen in a recent post, the snow mounds are getting bad. TaGeez and I are finding ourselves climbing banks and skidding down the other side. If the bank is too high or too steep, TaGeez helps to propel me over it, both ways. It's fun but tiresome on workdays.
On Thursday I needed a quick find as I was meeting Dad for dinner and didn't want to cache afterwards (the temps were supposed to drop drastically as night falls). I stopped by one of RayQix "Happy Birthday caches" that I've been saving for such an occasion. See the problem?
This one disturbed me. It was one of my "emergency CaDs" and it was buried. There was no way to get it out without drawing MAJOR attention as it's in the parking lot of a Chicken Shack and located RIGHT up on a very busy road. I had to use up another one of my emergency caches nearby.
You might be thinking about whining about nothing, but, after caching for almost 1100 days straight, the pickings in my area is getting slim. And I had less than 28 more days to go with the threat of Michigan's unpredictable weather looming....
This one ate at me so early Saturday morning, after dropping TaGeez off at work, I circled back here. I figured at 7 a.m. there would be little traffic (and a sparse chicken-buying public). As I hadn't expected to go for this cache when I sleepily left the house, I arrived unprepared (don't ask where my emergency car shovel is - it's a sore subject). Digging out my ice scraper, I set to work. I can't imagine what the patrons of the family restaurant across the street were thinking, watching me wail on an ice block with the handle of my scraper, but I got it!
As I said later in my log, I've never worked so hard for a cupcake!
Afterwards, feeling all accomplished, I headed off for chores. Stopping in the local hardware store, I spotted these babies and have added them to my winter caching supplies! Kid-sized so they fit easily in my trunk and less than $5 apiece.
No snowbank is safe! And, yes, I did get my car shovel back.

Winter Streaking Tip:
I normally leave the house with a plan, but we know about the best laid plans, right? This major snowstorm really did some damage. I find if I'm DNF'ing caches and still need the daily fix, I will check the recent activity of other streakers to see what caches they found accessible. Nothing like pulling up to a GZ and finding footprints leading the way and the cache unburied!

Hitting the Big 1000 and 5000!
On Wednesday, November 26th, I found my 5,000th cache on my 1,000th consecutive day of geocaching.
I'm lucky. I did have many advantages to help me along.
I'm lucky. I did have many advantages to help me along.
- I love to travel and I live in a cache-rich area (southeastern Michigan).
- I have an adventurous sweetheart who caches, too.
- And I did this as several other members of Team Free Range Lobsters were streaking, too.
I thought after one thousand days, I'd share what I learned. Here are my “streaking tips” especially
for winter.
*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*
Incorporate your cache-a-day as part of your routine. I plan my target cache (plus a backup) as I
get dressed in the morning. Before long,
it becomes second nature. When planning
your cache, consider what’s on your agenda for the day – last Thursday the
family gathered for Kriket’s birthday. She chose a restaurant in a very target-rich
area so I saved my cache for later that night.
Download a weather app.
According to the weatherman, the warmest part of Monday was first thing
in the morning. By noon we would drop below
-3°
and have snow squalls. Hence, I grabbed
my cache on my way to work.
On nicer days, drive a little to get your cache and/or pick a cache
with more difficult terrains. Save
the ones closer to home for severe weather days or days packed with family
commitments. If I’m on the road
somewhere with friends, I will ask them to stop for a few minutes so I can make
my grab, saving the ones closer to home.
Sounds trite but it’s a “cache a day
“ so pace yourself, even on a power trail.
Our local Cachers have setup a several mile-long power trail along the
I-275 bike trail. There are multiple
places to park and access the trail. If
you grab a cache a day, you are set for the next 4 months (or so)!
If you need a “numbers run” (to reach a milestone or to complete a
challenge), stay away from home.
Again, I’m lucky that I’m in a cache-rich area so I don’t have to travel
far for a pocket of smiley-goodness.
FTF-runs are not “streak friendly”.
I know it’s a downer, but when you get the notification you may not want
to run out and get that new cache 3.4 miles away. Save it for a rainy day.
Know your local hiders. In
our area, we have some Cachers who turn over their cache hides every six months
– make sure you grab them when you can.
There may be others where you have to grab their cache within the first week
of publication before it disappears, never to be “maintenanced” again. Another
hider nearby has an excellent history series with very basic hides (bringing
you to the local site is most important) so his caches are excellent for very
bad-weather days. One puzzle-master
disables his caches for the winter and another revels in particularly evil (and
unsolvable) hides.
Attend events in inclement weather. I, personally, prefer to grab a
physical cache on event day, but events are caches and will add a smiley to
your streak. They are also a way to learn the local hiding habits (see entry
above). Another reason to attend events…

Team Gates, Alona Spiegel, Caching Fire, the Grundalows and afishoutawater |
Make friends with other “streakers”. They’re running out of caches, too, so help
each other out! If each of you hide a
dozen or more P&G’s, you can get yourself through the winter.
Don’t assume just because it’s an LPC it’ll be a quick find. Last year TaGeez and I were standing on 6-foot
snow mounds, trying to dig out the skirt.
![]() |
It was in there. Trust me. |
Don’t assume because it is “high terrain” makes it unattainable in winter. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve used a
convenient snowbank to grab that tree cache!
Create a bookmark list. You
don’t want to be rushing to a family birthday or in the middle of a snowstorm and
trying to think of a cache to grab. Many
of the items on my list were recommended by other Cachers on our local FB group
in case I need a find in their area.
Speaking of bookmark lists, make sure you have access to an offline
copy of it. I have an offline list
saved in Geosphere in case geocaching.com is down for maintenance or we have a
severe windstorm, knocking out power and/or cellular service.
Expand your Cache Type repertoire.
Grab those Earth Caches on warm days. Many Virtuals are not
weather-dependent. There is such a thing
as simple Multis, too.

TaGeez and scrapcat at the Great Falls of Tinker's Creek |
Solve those puzzles. I LOVE
puzzles, but I know so many people who avoid them. Winter is not only a good time to sit in your
snug house solving puzzles, but, in many instances, a good time to go for the
puzzle final. For many creators around
here, the puzzle is the interesting part and the final can be a simple
park-and-grab.
Surround yourself with supportive friends
and family. Just shy of the first
anniversary of my streak, my car died and I had to car shop, relying on others
to get me back and forth to work and to the various dealers. I had just as many offers from friends and
family (Cachers and Muggles alike) to take me for my daily cache. My Dad pulled over on the way to a memorial
viewing at a funeral home so I wouldn’t have to walk to a cache in arctic
weather. This challenge is so much
easier when surrounded by those cheering you on.

Sunrise on Grand River
The weatherman said the warmest part of the day was around
sunrise (12˚ but “feels
like” -3˚) with
squalls later. So I grabbed my cache
first thing….
This was Grand River Boulevard around 7am. I was freezing my butt off, but I had the camera in one hand and the cache in the other.

Waiter, there's an alien in my soup!
Well, actually, my cache. Had an excellent lunch date with TaGeez and found our cache-a-day 348 ft away! Gorgeous day for a walk!
